Exotic Decor at Our Dallas store

We are fortunate enough to go on several trips a year to such exotic locations as India, China, and South America. During our journeys we stumble across unique items that might be vintage, antiques, or even the last one left. So, every trip, we're sure to bring our empty suitcases to fill with these rare finds so we can carry them back home.

Handmade Books in Jaipur, India

Making Books by Hand

This company was started when three young friends rented a booth at a trade fair 14 years ago to sell books and bags made of handmade paper. This Indian artisan has grown great lengths since then and now specializes in handmade paper, bags, books, and leather products. They are located in Jaipur, India and also have a small group of designers and workers from a small village outside of Jaipur.

In the middle of Winter, it’s always fun to dream about sunny days and fresh flowers that Spring is bound to bring. What better way to beckon the season change than a bounty of bright pink peonies? As a symbol of romance and prosperity the peony is bursting with feminine elegance, which we bring alive in our Peony Wall Art print shown below.

Beautiful fall garden.

The first day of fall is approaching soon and now is a great time to start your fall planting.  The plants that work the best in fall weather are perennials, bulbs, trees, and shrubs. Here are some tips for your fall garden/yard.

1. Fall is a great time to give you soil some much needed TLC from the harsh summer. Clean out your beds and remove any rotten vegetables that went unpicked, remove any dead plants, and add some compost to your soil.

2. Broccoli, cabbage, carrots, lettuce, radishes, and spinach are all vegetables that  can tolerate frost and cooler weather. This makes them ideal vegetables to begin planting now.

3. Asters, chrysanthemums, and pansies are  flowers that  can give your yard some fall color and will be able handle cooler temperatures.

There is something so special about these little creatures that always seem to intrigue me.  I love them in arrangements, in gardens and even simply alone in a small container.

Something you should know about me before reading this post is that I am terrible with taking care of my things. All of my jeans have holes, my glassware is in broken sets (pun intended), and all of my CDs are scratched. This is the number one reason I decided to add a terrarium to my dining area. They are very easy to maintain and are simple to make. There isn’t a single living thing in my space except for my wonderful pup, Klaus, and with the spring in bloom I have felt inspired. Plus, have you seen all the great terrarium jars out there? I just want to start collecting terrarium containers now! And when I found a leather-strap hurricane at our Flea Market Grand Opening Sale last month, I knew it was serendipity.

The problem I’m faced with now: What type of terrarium? Here are a few DIY projects I’ve looked at. Which one do you like the most, dear readers?

The White House vegetable garden is one of my favorites.

Today is the first day of spring, although here in Texas it has felt like spring for the last couple of weeks! The beginning of spring means that it is gardening season; this past weekend I made a list of the vegetables and herbs I wanted to grow this year.  I am definitely planting some tomatoes, jalapenos, garlic, and bell peppers.  I can’t wait until I get to make  fresh garden salsa!  A tip that I am going to try this year is to plant Marigolds around my garden; the roots of the Marigolds produce a chemical that repels certain types of beetles and other bugs.  What are you planting in your garden? Do you have any  gardening tips to share?

Today is Floral Design Day, a day to appreciate floral arranging and designs. I thought nothing better expresses my love for flowers like this quote from Anne Morrow Lindbergh:

“Arranging a bowl of flowers in the morning can give a sense of quiet in a crowded day–like writing a poem or saying a prayer.”

I hope you find yourself surrounded by flowers today!

I love when natural elements are brought into more formal arrangements. So when I saw the work of Amy Merrick, a Brooklyn based floral designer, I was thrilled. I came across her work through her posts on Design Sponge and her blog An Apple a Day. On both sites you can see her mixing things like fresh cut branches and fruit on the vine into lush arrangements. I love how she chooses a color pallet and builds an arrangement around it. In the photos below, she adds limes and pomegranates to arrangements, and the last arrangements are all different shades of rose and pink. The color combination is both elegant and organic. She also just revamped her website and it looks amazing. Check it out here.

Wisteria Floral Arranging

Now, there are two colors that sound like they wouldn’t go together! But, like often in nature, seemingly unlike things can complement each other quite nicely.

Here at the Wisteria office, we have all these beautiful olive-colored ceramic containers that I had been wanting to do a floral story with and was just waiting for the inspiration. And then it came, orange! I love orange! So bright and cheery. Sweet but not too sweet. The easiest thing about these arrangements is that they only have one variety of flower for each arrangement. ANYONE can do this!

For the first arrangement, I mounded Royal Ambiance roses together in a low pot. The second arrangement I wanted to use orange tulips in a small mouthed container. It is important to strip the leaves off of tulips in order to get them to fit. I also clipped all the flowers at a diagonal and made sure I immediately put them in the water for a quick drink. For the last arrangement, I wanted something a little more masculine and sophisticated so I used two bunches of Eremerus. I love how it remains sculptural but still resembles fresh cut wildflowers.

All these arrangements, because they are in the same color family, would look lovely placed throughout the home, adding consistency and a splash of summer color around every corner of your house.
