Empower African Children is a nonprofit organization launched in 2006 by Alexis Hefley and Donna Malouf, following Hefley’s 15 years of work with Ugandan children. Empower is committed to realizing Africa’s future by developing the promise of a new, impassioned generation. Through rigorous education and global connection, they prepare Ugandan youth from vulnerable family situations for a lifetime of influence.

Partnerships for Children (PC) is a nonprofit located in Austin, Texas, providing support for the area’s children. Its mission is to cultivate resources and partnerships that help abused and neglected children and provide resources for CPS caseworkers. PC offers a variety of programs to benefit the community, such as the YES Mentor Program which offers life skills training and support with an emphasis on financial literacy.

SafeHaven, the largest women’s shelter in Texas, has advanced its mission to end domestic violence through safety, support, prevention, and social change. It’s located in Arlington and Fort Worth, housing up to 174 women. The organization provides a 24-hour hotline, case management, transitional housing, legal advocacy, and counseling for survivors and their children.

“The Akola Project is one of five sustainable development initiatives of The UAPO (Ugandan American Partnership Organization). Since 2007, the project has empowered more than 200 women in Uganda to uplift their families and communities through income-generating crafts, such as jewelry-making, combined with village savings and loans programs. Akola Project sales provide fair wages to the women, many of whom are widows and HIV-positive, so that they can afford medical care and school fees for their children. Additional proceeds contribute to funding The UAPO’s other projects, which include drilling water wells and building vocational centers throughout Uganda.”
