Exotic Decor at Our Dallas store

We are fortunate enough to go on several trips a year to such exotic locations as India, China, and South America. During our journeys we stumble across unique items that might be vintage, antiques, or even the last one left. So, every trip, we're sure to bring our empty suitcases to fill with these rare finds so we can carry them back home.

Handmade Books in Jaipur, India

Making Books by Hand

This company was started when three young friends rented a booth at a trade fair 14 years ago to sell books and bags made of handmade paper. This Indian artisan has grown great lengths since then and now specializes in handmade paper, bags, books, and leather products. They are located in Jaipur, India and also have a small group of designers and workers from a small village outside of Jaipur.

There’s nothing better than a long summer weekend in Chicago! The weather is great (especially compared to Texas summers), and there are tons of fun family activities. My oldest daughter, Quinn, is there now to visit her grandparents.

Here are a few of her favorite things to do in Chicago:

Millennium Park

Lincoln Park Zoo

Lego Store and American Girl Store

Her only complaint so far is she can’t eat ketchup on her hot dogs!

Quite honestly, my very favorite grilled cheese is the kindergarten version…buttered white bread with American cheese (plastic removed.)  But since that’s probably not very interesting for National Grilled Cheese month, here’s my current runner up.

Grilled Goat Cheese and Beet Sandwich

Nutty 9-grain bread, buttered

Roasted red beet, sliced thin

Arugula

Honey flavored goat cheese

Assemble and grill until warm.

I love finding the perfect, unique, and thoughtful gift. I procrastinate actually buying gifts because once I make a purchase, then the quest is over. For those of you who don’t love the quest as much as I do, here are a few suggestions:

Kelly's Gift Guide

1. For my friends with furry friends – Kiehl’s Canine Shampoo, Conditioner, and Spritz.

2. For the kids – Dylan’s Candy Gingerbread House Kit or Gomi Taro’s Play All Day activity book are great indoor activities to keep the kids busy during their winter break.

3. For the entertainer – Mouse Cheese Spreaders and whatever selection of cheeses Jimmy’s Food Store recommends that week.

4. For my girlfriends – These Tribal Beaded Necklaces come in 3 great colors.

5.  For the teachers – This Blue and White Floral Candle Jar can be used as a pretty container for their paper clips once the candle is gone.

6. For the hostess – Times Ten Cellars’ Pinot Noir with Wisteria’s glass grapes tied at the neck.

7. For the drop-in guest – Molton Brown Thai Vert Fine Liquid Hand wash  or Nest and Egg Hand Towels. The embroidery on these Nest and Egg Hand Towels is stunning and they are a great price.

8. For my neighbors – Homemade Lemon Pound Cake or Strawberry Nut Bread in a disposable paper loaf pan from Sur La Table; I try to deliver it on Christmas Eve so they can have a quick snack first thing Christmas morning.

9. For my husband and brother-in-law – Golden Tee Plug N Play. They both love playing this game in our neighborhood sports bar. Now they can play at home.

Cranberry Dip

Every fall, my family and I pack up the car and travel to our friend’s farm. One of my favorite things is Mrs. Lewis’s cranberry dip, and I look forward to the dip as much as the party itself! I love serving it at my own get-togethers, because it’s easy to make ahead and it’s so fun to hear my friends guess at the unexpected ingredients. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

1 12 oz. bag of dried cranberries

1/4 cup cherry preserves

1/3 c chopped green onion

1 bunch chopped cilantro

1/3 c chopped bell pepper

1 teaspoon black pepper  or less

1 small can chopped green chilies (I like to add a few chopped jalapenos for an extra kick)

2 teaspoons garlic salt or fresh chopped garlic

Mix and serve with Fritos scoops or pita chips. It’s also delicious served over a mild goat cheese.
