Exotic Decor at Our Dallas store

We are fortunate enough to go on several trips a year to such exotic locations as India, China, and South America. During our journeys we stumble across unique items that might be vintage, antiques, or even the last one left. So, every trip, we're sure to bring our empty suitcases to fill with these rare finds so we can carry them back home.

Handmade Books in Jaipur, India

Making Books by Hand

This company was started when three young friends rented a booth at a trade fair 14 years ago to sell books and bags made of handmade paper. This Indian artisan has grown great lengths since then and now specializes in handmade paper, bags, books, and leather products. They are located in Jaipur, India and also have a small group of designers and workers from a small village outside of Jaipur.

Daughter of our marketing manager, Alice, Ryan recently modeled in Wisteria’s catalog. Check out our May issue (p. 26).

How old are you?
I turned 11 in April.

Have you ever modeled before?
My grandmother and grandfather are both photographers. They make me pose for pictures ALL the time!

Do you want to model again?
I don’t like to pose for pictures. I like to run around while someone takes my picture.

What’s your favorite outfit?
Right now it is a pair of lace shorts with a denim shirt. I wore it to my friend’s birthday party and thought it looked cute. Now I try to wear it all the time, but my mom won’t let me.

What’s your favorite toy?
I don’t really play with toys that much. My favorite thing to do is put makeup on my girlfriends and my mom.

What’s your favorite food?
Sushi

What do you want to be when you grow up?
A professional tennis player.

What was your favorite part about being in the Wisteria catalog?
Seeing the cool house where the photo shoot was. I want to live there.

What was your least favorite part about being in the catalog?

Waiting around.

Last call for celebrating National Grilled Cheese Month! I call this an Italian grilled cheese only because it calls for things like pesto, basil, and mozzarella. Really, it’s just a delicious sandwich to eat anytime you can get fresh basil and the ripest tomatoes.

Italian Grilled Cheese

Ingredients
Pesto
1-2 ripe tomatoes
Real Italian mozzarella cheese
1 loaf of bread (something like a salted ciabatta tastes amazing)
Butter (optional)

You can make this one of two ways, depending on the bread you use.

Skillet method
Warm a skillet on your stove to medium heat. Meanwhile cut traditional sandwich bread into thin slices. Butter the outside of each slice. Spread pesto on the inside of each slice. Fill the sandwich with tomato and mozzarella slices. Put the sandwich together and “grill” each buttered side in a skillet.

Oven method (recommended)
Preheat the oven (I usually go for the standard 350-degrees). Starting with a small loaf of bread that already has a nice crust on the outside, slice it lengthwise. Continue as above: Spread pesto on the inside of each slice. Fill the sandwich with tomato and mozzarella slices. Put the sandwich together and place it in the oven to warm, just until the cheese melts.

Enjoy with a side salad and a refreshing glass of wine.

Nora is one of the sweet faces in our Customer Service Center. I’ve worked with her during one of our warehouse sales and can definitely say she is super nice and calm, two attributes I’d think would be very important in place like the Customer Service Center. She’s worked at Wisteria for 4 years.

What are your favorite things about working at Wisteria?
Definitely it’s my co-workers. The girls in my department keep the atmosphere upbeat and fun.

What is your favorite place to visit?
That would have to be anywhere with my kids and family. Since moving to Texas four years ago, I miss them all dearly.

What is the one place in the world you’ve never been but would love to go?
I would love to go to Ireland. I’d like to see the history behind my family background.

How would you describe your personal style?
Casual

What is your favorite Wisteria item?
Hands down, it’s The Moorish Chest!

My one indulgence is:
Reality T.V.! Go Housewives!

What is one thing people don’t know about you?
I’m deathly afraid of roller coasters, and I don’t really know why!

Favorite spot in my house:
That’s easy: Floating in the pool!

Favorite food:
I love all seafood. The one exception is Catfish.

Favorite place to watch the sun set:
Anywhere over water. The reflection can be just beautiful.

Every Easter, Christians gather to celebrate Jesus’s resurrection, and ultimately rejoice in his life. In America, Easter also consists of dyed eggs, flowers, bunnies, and an endless supply of chocolate candy. What do Jesus and bunnies have in common? How did a spiritual celebration turn into a chocolate-eating contest?

Obviously flowers, bunnies, and dyed eggs remind us of spring, renewal, and new life. And, for me, few things in this world make me stop and savor life more than eating a delicious piece of chocolate. And, Easter is the ultimate celebration, filled with food, family, and a reminder of hope. All of these things remind us to be thankful for our blessed life.

So, with Easter only a few days away, let’s remember to celebrate and thank God for this abundant life.

One way we celebrate Easter is with our He Is Risen Booklets (shown above). The Bible verses in the booklets are listed below:

1 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. 2 And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. 5 And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, 7 that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.” 8 And they remembered his words, 9 and returning from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.

I’ve never considered myself a minimalist. In fact, I have to practice a lot of restraint in junk stores. So, I’ve always admired those with more modern aesthetics, who can garner just a few things and make a house still feel like a home, specifically those who can incorporate mid-century modern design. When I see items from this style, they strike me as so distinct from other styles. I thought it would be interesting to find out how it came to be.

During the Industrial Revolution, people were continually looking for ways to streamline processes. Mass production was evolving and replacing the furniture artisan and designer. With this, design aesthetics became less important. Among other shifts at the end of the 19th century, Art Nouveau arose, a separatist movement focusing on new thinking in art, which paved the way for more thoughtful designers. Scandinavian design and the Bauhaus movement also became popular. They emphasized simplicity and organic shapes ands bringing modern design into America’s post-war homes. The result was mid-century modern design, a time period (1933-1965) of well-known designs and designers (think Charles Eames, Mies van der Rohe, and Eero Saarinen).

Below, we’ve compiled some our products that remind us of this design style. Enjoy!

Holi is a Hindu spring festival also called the festival of colors. It’s a fun-filled event celebrated in late March or early April and primarily observed in India, Pakistan, and Nepal. Several people from Wisteria got to experience it one year and what great fun it was! In addition to dancing and singing, participants throw powered paint all over each other to welcome spring and celebrates new life, often associated with this time of year!

Knoxville, Tennessee

Somewhere between the Deep South and the Smoky Mountains lies a wonderful little place called Knoxville, TN. This is the place I call home, no matter where I actually live. Just writing about it makes me all teary-eyed. The city is cute and has the backdrop of the Smoky Mountains. And if you need another reason to go, it’s been compared to Austin but without the hype.

Here are the top five things (in no particular order) I love about Knoxville:

1. It’s only 30-45 minutes away from the Great Smoky Mountains. I highly recommend a picnic lunch in Cades Cove or visiting Elkmount park in the early June, where you can see synchronous fireflies!

2. Among all the other things I love about this city, it has an up-and-coming design and music scene. Check out Yee Haw, the historic Tennessee Theater, and Market Square. For the Knoxville poster above, go here. Since I’m from the south, I must also give a special shout-out for bluegrass music.

3. Barbecue. I know I should convert to Texas barbecue, but I can’t deny the vinegary deliciousness that is East Tennessee pulled pork. It’s the perfect combination of Memphis and Carolina barbecue. Plus, with barbecue comes fried okra, cornbread, green beans, and if you’re lucky, fried green tomatoes!

4. The Knoxville Skyline. The Sunsphere, a giant steel truss structure stands in downtown Knoxville to commemorate the site of the 1982 World’s Fair. Knoxville is also home to the University of Tennessee (my alma mater). The Tennessee River runs through the city and the Smoky Mountains overlook it. It really is beautifu and more beautiful than Austin, if I do say so myself!

5. Tennessee Autumn. The leaves changing colors, the crisp breeze, the fresh smell, and football. (I can’t mention Knoxville without mentioning college football). Fall in Tennessee is absolutely breathtaking.

Has anyone ever been? If you haven’t and you’re planning a trip, I’d love to offer more specific recommendations!

We have some really interesting people who work here. A small piece of information someone mentions in passing often turns out to be really interesting or just too funny to not tell. Such was the case with Lizzy, our Product Development and Content Coordinator. Word got out that she’s got a hidden talent we couldn’t resist sharing.

What’s your hidden talent?
Pogo stick!

How did you first discover you had this talent?
In lower school, while on the jump rope “team”.

What if we asked you to perform this for us?
I think I’d politely decline… unless, of course, I was handed a pogo stick right then and there.

Can you give us any tips on being as good as you are at your talent?
Have a lot of free time on your hands!

Have you ever met anyone else who can do this?
Not 1,154 bounces in a row (my 4th grade record)

Would you be willing to take on someone else in a competition?
Actually, yes.

Any pogo champions out there? Anyone willing to take on Lizzy?
