Exotic Decor at Our Dallas store

We are fortunate enough to go on several trips a year to such exotic locations as India, China, and South America. During our journeys we stumble across unique items that might be vintage, antiques, or even the last one left. So, every trip, we're sure to bring our empty suitcases to fill with these rare finds so we can carry them back home.

Handmade Books in Jaipur, India

Making Books by Hand

This company was started when three young friends rented a booth at a trade fair 14 years ago to sell books and bags made of handmade paper. This Indian artisan has grown great lengths since then and now specializes in handmade paper, bags, books, and leather products. They are located in Jaipur, India and also have a small group of designers and workers from a small village outside of Jaipur.

Leah, our Director of Customer Service went on a cruise this summer to Italy and Greece. She took tons of photos so that everyone in the office could live vicariously through her and feel as if we were there!  Here is what she has to say about her trip.

“This was my first trip to Europe so I was very excited to share it with my family.   We spent a few days in Rome followed by a 10 day cruise through more of Italy and Greece.   I was overwhelmed with the history and incredible sites.  I could not have asked for a better vacation.  We stayed at the Santa Maria Hotel in the Piazza de Santa Maria in Trastevere.”

“Anyone who has visited Rome knows there is much to do and see.  We filled each of our days with plenty of adventure and history. ”

“Seeing Ephesus in Turkey was incredible.  The city of Ephesus was built in the 1st century BC with a population of 250,000.  It became one of the largest cities in the Mediterranean.”

“We saw the Parthenon in Athens, Greece and  the city of Pompei in Naples, Italy.  Each stop brought us more adventures and beautiful sites.  Greece was filled with beautiful blue water and friendly people.  In addition to Athens, Greece  we were able to visit Rhodes, Mykonos and Santorini.   Santorini, Greece is basically what remains after an enormous volcanic explosion. ”

“After enjoying our day in the cities and islands we would enjoy a beautiful sunset from the back of the ship. ”

Our good friends, Kelly and Quinn, are not shy in letting you know that not only do they love sweets, but they love to eat!  However, you would never guess their love of food, because they are a very petite mother and daughter duo…

Knowing their love of donuts, I knew they would be the perfect pair to give us a review of Hypnotic Donuts in Dallas.  And of course, they did not disappoint!

Who doesn’t love donuts?  Well, my family really loves donuts.  We even have them on our birthday instead of cake and ice cream – complete with candles!  So when I started hearing the buzz about a new, different kind of donut shop, Hypnotic Donuts, I had to check it out.  It did not disappoint.

There’s a saying that goes “Love takes time.” We think with some things, this quip is entirely true. Take our bone and mother-of-pearl inlay pieces, for example. One piece can take up to three weeks to complete. Though it might take time to make them, it certainly didn’t take long for us to fall in love with them.

Here are some other inlay pieces we have.

There is something so special about these little creatures that always seem to intrigue me.  I love them in arrangements, in gardens and even simply alone in a small container.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 4 egg whites
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 cup sour milk (how to make this below)
  • 1/3 cup tart cherry preserve
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 12 tart cherries
  • Red food coloring (optional)

How to make sour milk: Place 2 teaspoons lemon juice or vinegar in a glass measuring cup. Add enough milk to make 3/4 cup liquid; stir. Let the mixture stand for 5 minutes before using.

Cherry Almond Butter Frosting Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons tart cherry preserve
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • Milk

Directions:
1. Allow butter and egg whites to stand at room temperature for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, line twenty-four 2-1/2-inch muffin cups with paper bake cups (or coat with cooking spray). In a medium bowl stir together flour, baking powder, salt, and baking soda. In a 2-cup glass measuring cup combine buttermilk and cherry preserve; set aside.
2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a large mixing bowl beat butter with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add sugar, vanilla, and almond extract; beat until combined. Add egg whites, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Alternately add flour mixture and buttermilk mixture to beaten mixture, beating on low speed after each addition just until combined. I also added about 3 drops of red food coloring to make a nicer presentation.
3. Spoon batter into prepared muffin cups, filling each about two-thirds full. Use the back of a spoon to smooth out batter in cups. Press a cherry half into batter in each cup.
4. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes or until tops spring back when lightly touched. Cool cupcakes in muffin cups on wire racks for 5 minutes. Remove cupcakes from muffin cups. Cool completely on wire racks.

Frosting Directions:
In a large mixing bowl beat butter with an electric mixer on medium speed until smooth. Gradually add 1 cup of the powdered sugar, beating well. Beat in cherry preserve and almond extract. Gradually beat in additional powdered sugar. If necessary, beat in additional juice or milk, 1 teaspoon at a time, until frosting reaches spreading consistency.

Charlotte belongs to our Project Manager, Kim Berglund.  Kim is responsible for scheduling and managing the creative minds of Wisteria. Kim definitely represents the cat of the group, because when the cat is away the mice will play!

What’s your favorite pastime?

Chasing my big sister Abbie.  That’s me, pictured next to her. One of my favorite pictures.

What’s the one thing that really makes your hackles stand up?

The local Tomcat.  My Mom calls him “Scraggles”.  He comes up to my screened porch and sits there just staring me down like I’m lunch or something.  What a jerk.

What’s your favorite toy?

A Dum Dum sucker.  They are surprisingly fun to play with.  Other than that, a brown paper bag.

Who’s your favorite snuggle buddy?

My Mom.  But sometimes she doesn’t like to snuggle she says that I make her too hot.

Favorite treat?

I really like to get wet food from time to time.  I like the juice.

What is your favorite kind mischief to get into?

Taunting that Scraggles back.  But then we fight and my Mom makes me come back inside.

If you had to describe your perfect day, what would it be?

I would like to be able to go outside and patrol the neighborhood, find Scraggles and kick his butt, feast on the food the neighbor leaves outside and get back inside before Mom comes home.

This week, one of our very own has her home featured on Houzz. By day, Brandi spends most of her time in the photo studio, running around town for flowers and fabrics, and being the right-hand lady to our Photography Director. By night, she is a DIY dynamo, garage sale guru, and has a keen eye for collaborating styles and palettes to create an appealing and welcoming space.

Brandi say she gets a lot of her design inspiration from designer Angie Hranowski: “I love everything she does!” She tends to not purchase new items because, “I love things that need work because I can make them my own.”
