Exotic Decor at Our Dallas store

We are fortunate enough to go on several trips a year to such exotic locations as India, China, and South America. During our journeys we stumble across unique items that might be vintage, antiques, or even the last one left. So, every trip, we're sure to bring our empty suitcases to fill with these rare finds so we can carry them back home.

Handmade Books in Jaipur, India

Making Books by Hand

This company was started when three young friends rented a booth at a trade fair 14 years ago to sell books and bags made of handmade paper. This Indian artisan has grown great lengths since then and now specializes in handmade paper, bags, books, and leather products. They are located in Jaipur, India and also have a small group of designers and workers from a small village outside of Jaipur.

Here is a vintage postcard that was sent out around Leap Day.

Happy Leap Day! Since most people do not know too much about leap year, here are some facts:

  • A leap day is to make up for the fact that 365 day years are shorter than a solar year (by 6 hours).
  • Leap years happen only in years that are divisible by 4.
  • Years that are evenly divisible by 100 will not be leap years unless they are also evenly divisible by 400.
  • The tradition that women can propose to men only during leap years (or some say only on Leap Day) is thought to have originated in Ireland during the 5th century.
  • In Finland, if a man refuses a woman’s proposal on Leap Day, it is expected he buy her enough fabric for a skirt.
  • People who are born on February 29th are called “Leapers”.

Enjoy your extra day!

Today is Floral Design Day, a day to appreciate floral arranging and designs. I thought nothing better expresses my love for flowers like this quote from Anne Morrow Lindbergh:

“Arranging a bowl of flowers in the morning can give a sense of quiet in a crowded day–like writing a poem or saying a prayer.”

I hope you find yourself surrounded by flowers today!

I think with marriage, children, and age one starts to go to the movies more often. At least, this is what happened for me and my husband. We have a group of friends that we frequent the movies with followed by dinner afterwards to discuss the movie, the actors, and whatever gossip is involved with either. I was quite excited when we moved to Dallas and our neighbors, who are now dear friends, asked if we wanted to be part of a neighborhood Oscar competition.  Unbeknownst to them my love of movies, I happily accepted. Two years and two wins later, the pressure is on! If I win my third year in a row, I get to keep the golden statue on permanent display in my home!

Needless to say, this does deserve a party!  So, here are a few fun ideas that I have come across if you are thinking of throwing an Oscar soirée!

01. Recreate the “Tree of Life” by hanging Oscar ballots from branches.

02. Set up a bar cart with drinks and trinkets that you would find at “Midnight in Paris”.

03. Dress in evening wear reminiscent of “The Artist” in the 1930s.

04. Serve crabcake (“The Descendents”) sliders (“Moneyball”).

And don’t forget the infamous chocolate pie from “The Help” for dessert!

Except for one particular era, I’ve never wanted to live at any time in history other than right now. But the one that does call out to me as an artist is Paris in the first decade or two of the twentieth century. That’s when the tectonic plates of representational art and something altogether different began to grind one against the other, in preparation of snapping apart. You can still feel the aftershocks a century later.

Smack dab in the middle of it all was a Romanian sculptor named Constantin Brâncuşi, born on February 19, 1876 and destined to be included in one of the most significant art events of the twentieth century, the 1913 International Exhibition of Modern Art in New York. Most commonly remembered for the debut of Marcel Duchamp’s Nude Descending a Staircase, the so-called Armory Show embodied this seismic shift in contemporary art, where Brâncuşi’s tribal-looking sculpture was juxtaposed with the work of Cézanne and Gauguin, Goya and Van Gogh, Matisse and Picasso.

But even before, Brâncuşi was on his search for new ways of looking at things: after only months he’d left the tutelage of Auguste Rodin saying, ”Nothing can grow under big trees.” Shown here is his studio as photographed by Edward Steichen around 1920. Some shapes bear a resemblance to our own Architect’s Favorite Side Table.

Hello! Today I want to talk about design rules and why it’s okay to break them sometimes. There is a preconceived notion that dining chairs must be bought in sets and be matchy-matchy. Well, I am here to tell you it is totally okay to mix things up! It’s a great way to mix antiques with more modern pieces, and add interest and charm to your dining room. Below are some of my favorite examples of people who mixed it up and got it right. Mixed-matched chairs look best when they relate to each other in style, scale, shape, or color. But it doesn’t have to be all four at the same time. See below for examples.

A series of all antique chairs of similar style and color pallet looks just right. The scale of the chairs differs slightly, but together they all tell a pretty story. And I love the white dining table!

Here is a more modern approach to the same idea. But the modern shape and scale of the chairs contrasts nicely with the rustic qualities of the farmhouse table.

Here the chairs are all made of the same material (metal), but differ greatly in shape and scale. They still all work as a set and I love seeing stools pulled in for extra seating.

Here is one of my favorite chairs of all time: The Eames chair. The shape and style is the same but they chose complimentary colors to mix it up. I also could see a black version of the Eames chair mixed with antique chairs looking super cool.

And I couldn’t resist throwing in a shot of my own dining to prove I practice what I preach! I mixed my grandmother’s antique chairs with the Wisteria Wishbone Chairs and I love the results!

Have fun mixing it up!

Zapp and Roger, feline friends of our Marketing Coordinator, Nikki.
Roger and Zapp

After seeing all the cute dog blogs month after month, we have finally decided to feature our cute kitty friends! My two twin tuxedo cats were very thrilled to be the first-ever felines interviewed. Meet Zapp and Roger!

What’s your favorite past time?

Zapp – Sleeping and eating.  When I was younger I really tried to be a cat model, but my other two past times (sleeping and eating) prevented me from it.

Roger – I love to lie on the chair and look out the window.

What’s the one thing that really makes your hackles stand up?

Zapp – I really dislike it when I am sleeping and Mom or Dad wake me up for no reason. They also like to put random hats or glasses on me. Oh, I also HATE baths.

Roger – I don’t like strangers or loud noises, they scare me sometimes. Also, my brother can be really annoying and try and bite me when I am sleeping.

What’s your favorite toy?

Zapp – I will play with anything. It does not take much to entertain me. Last week I found out that I enjoy playing with grapes that Mom dropped on the floor.

Roger – I love my pouf balls or the laser pointer. I WILL get that red dot one day!

Who’s your favorite snuggle buddy?

Zapp – I don’t really care who I snuggle with as long as I have my fleece blanket. Do you want to snuggle?

Roger – I love to snuggle with my Mom, she gives the best belly rubs. I will snuggle with Dad if she is not home.

What’s your favorite treat?

Zapp – I have been called weird for this but I really like French baguettes. I also like tuna. I have not tried them together but that might be tasty.

Roger – I love tuna! I can hear when the can is being opened. Yummy!

What’s your favorite kind of mischief to get into?

Zapp – Any and all, I really like to hide somewhere and stick my paw out as someone walks by or I like to sneak in to the garage and roll on the ground and get covered in dirt or dust.

Roger – I am typically a sweet cat but sometimes (all the time) my brother does something to annoy me and then I have to chase him around the house and wrestle. I always win.

Knoxville, Tennessee

Somewhere between the Deep South and the Smoky Mountains lies a wonderful little place called Knoxville, TN. This is the place I call home, no matter where I actually live. Just writing about it makes me all teary-eyed. The city is cute and has the backdrop of the Smoky Mountains. And if you need another reason to go, it’s been compared to Austin but without the hype.

Here are the top five things (in no particular order) I love about Knoxville:

1. It’s only 30-45 minutes away from the Great Smoky Mountains. I highly recommend a picnic lunch in Cades Cove or visiting Elkmount park in the early June, where you can see synchronous fireflies!

2. Among all the other things I love about this city, it has an up-and-coming design and music scene. Check out Yee Haw, the historic Tennessee Theater, and Market Square. For the Knoxville poster above, go here. Since I’m from the south, I must also give a special shout-out for bluegrass music.

3. Barbecue. I know I should convert to Texas barbecue, but I can’t deny the vinegary deliciousness that is East Tennessee pulled pork. It’s the perfect combination of Memphis and Carolina barbecue. Plus, with barbecue comes fried okra, cornbread, green beans, and if you’re lucky, fried green tomatoes!

4. The Knoxville Skyline. The Sunsphere, a giant steel truss structure stands in downtown Knoxville to commemorate the site of the 1982 World’s Fair. Knoxville is also home to the University of Tennessee (my alma mater). The Tennessee River runs through the city and the Smoky Mountains overlook it. It really is beautifu and more beautiful than Austin, if I do say so myself!

5. Tennessee Autumn. The leaves changing colors, the crisp breeze, the fresh smell, and football. (I can’t mention Knoxville without mentioning college football). Fall in Tennessee is absolutely breathtaking.

Has anyone ever been? If you haven’t and you’re planning a trip, I’d love to offer more specific recommendations!

One of our favorite looks is the French Industrial look. Combinations of steel and wood in contemporary shapes hint to an earlier time and place. I can see these pieces in an industrial loft, a modern apartment, or even a more traditional home, propped with an antique camera collection, old film cases, and lots of design books. And the great news is all these cool pieces are on sale and clearance! See the new low prices below and get the French Industrial look for your own home.

1. w4100 Pendant Cage Lamp $62.55   2.w4427 Iron Trussing Bookshelf $599.00   3. w4732 Right on Track Coffee Table $479.60
