Exotic Decor at Our Dallas store

We are fortunate enough to go on several trips a year to such exotic locations as India, China, and South America. During our journeys we stumble across unique items that might be vintage, antiques, or even the last one left. So, every trip, we're sure to bring our empty suitcases to fill with these rare finds so we can carry them back home.

Handmade Books in Jaipur, India

Making Books by Hand

This company was started when three young friends rented a booth at a trade fair 14 years ago to sell books and bags made of handmade paper. This Indian artisan has grown great lengths since then and now specializes in handmade paper, bags, books, and leather products. They are located in Jaipur, India and also have a small group of designers and workers from a small village outside of Jaipur.

Curiosity Domes

Where do I put a curiosity dome? What could I put in it? Does it go with the look in my room?

Sound familiar? I know when I first saw the curiosity domes I initially asked myself these questions. But once our team started to photograph them for the catalog and showcase them in beautiful environments I started to get it. Now, I have found a few different ways to use them, including some of my own little inspirations.

  1. Show off your collectibles (like we did here with Joe’s watches).
  2. Storing extra-special trinkets.
  3. Holding delicate silk scarves and bowties (to reduce creasing!).
  4. Photo container for tall photographs and photo strips.
  5. Showcase seasonal decoration (like we did above).

How are some other ways you would use your curiosity domes?

Brittany Family Gift Guide

I looooooove gift giving! But, I usually obsess too much over finding the perfect gift and then put off the actual buying of the gifts until last minute. I hope that will not be the case this year (although I haven’t gotten a single thing yet!). Here’s what I’m thinking about getting:

1. For my dad: iTunes gift card   2. Stocking stuffers: Reese’s Trees

Cranberry Dip

Every fall, my family and I pack up the car and travel to our friend’s farm. One of my favorite things is Mrs. Lewis’s cranberry dip, and I look forward to the dip as much as the party itself! I love serving it at my own get-togethers, because it’s easy to make ahead and it’s so fun to hear my friends guess at the unexpected ingredients. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

1 12 oz. bag of dried cranberries

1/4 cup cherry preserves

1/3 c chopped green onion

1 bunch chopped cilantro

1/3 c chopped bell pepper

1 teaspoon black pepper  or less

1 small can chopped green chilies (I like to add a few chopped jalapenos for an extra kick)

2 teaspoons garlic salt or fresh chopped garlic

Mix and serve with Fritos scoops or pita chips. It’s also delicious served over a mild goat cheese.

Here in the Dallas metroplex, we rarely ever get snow before the holidays approach. I think a part of all of us here wishes for the classic white Christmas (except for the whole shoveling part). Well, our retail location directly across from Love Field Airport has made our wishes come true. Check out all the Christmas majesty they’ve created below! And if you want to stop by and see it all in person, visit www.wisteriaoutlet.com for directions.

Every year, it takes me awhile to decide what gifts to get the people on my list. I like to make sure I am getting everyone something they would really want, and to make sure my gifts are surprises. My mother and sister are terrible at keeping their gifts secret, so we always know what they are gifting to everyone. I am surprised they have not started telling me what they are getting me or asking me what I am getting them! Hopefully, they are not reading this. Here are my gift ideas for this year:

Nikki's Gift Guide

1. The Cooks – my mother and grandmother both love to cook and would love a set of these for decoration and another set to actual use in the kitchen. Quotable Wooden Utensils, Wisteria

2. The Kids – “Life-Size Aquarium” is a book any kid would love there are 35 different sea creatures that all have life-size images and fun facts about them. Life-Size Aquarium, Uncommongoods

3. The Extended Family and Neighbors – I like to make homemade gifts for people because I am normally on a budget during the holidays. Though this is the case, I still like to get everyone a little something. This year I am canning homemade tomato sauce and will give that alongside an Italian dried herb mix from my garden.

4. The People with Children – Every year we get my boyfriend’s sister and brother-in-law a gift card to their favorite restaurant and a coupon for a night of free baby sitting service from us. They rarely get to go out with themselves with 3 children. They always say it is their favorite gift.

5. The Sister – My younger sister is so picky and changes her mind on a daily basis. This makes it impossible to pick something out for her! I have learned to stick with basic things that I know she would wear. Brass Drop Necklace, For Me For You

6. The Men – I always have the hardest time shopping for my dad and brother. I like the idea of getting them this shaving set because neither of them would go out and buy these items, but would love all of them! Clinique Essentials of Shaving, Sephora.com

7. The Friends – These plates are perfect for my friends because they all love wine and entertaining. Wooden Vino Plate, Wisteria

Baked Brie with Mushrooms and Thyme

Courtesy Bon Appetit

Ingredients

  • 1/2 ounce dried porcini mushrooms*
  • 2/3 cup dry red wine
  • 2 tablespoons (1/4 stick) butter
  • 6 ounces crimini (baby bella) mushrooms, halved or quartered if large
  • 6 ounces shiitake mushrooms, stemmed, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons minced shallot (about 1 large)
  • 2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme
  • 1 13- to 14-ounce Brie (about 5 inches in diameter; preferably in wooden box)
  • 1 baguette, cut into 1/4-inch-thick slices

Preparation

  • Rinse dried porcini to remove any grit. Place porcini and wine in small saucepan. Bring to simmer over low heat; remove from heat. Let soak until soft, about 20 minutes. Using slotted spoon, transfer porcini to work surface and coarsely chop. Line strainer with damp paper towel; strain wine into small bowl and reserve.
  • Melt butter in heavy large skillet over medium-high heat. Add crimini and shiitakes. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and cook until brown, stirring occasionally, about 8 minutes. Add shallot and stir until soft, about 1 minute. Add chopped porcini and strained wine. Boil until almost dry, about 1 minute. Stir in thyme. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Cool.
  • Remove Brie from box, discarding lid and paper. Using sharp knife, cut top rind from Brie; discard. Return Brie to box. (Alternatively, stack two 12-inch rounds of foil and fold up around bottom and sides of Brie, crimping foil at edges, leaving top exposed.) Mound mushroom mixture atop Brie. DO AHEAD Can be made 8 hours ahead. Cover and chill. Bring to room temperature before continuing.
  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Place Brie with mushrooms on rimmed baking sheet. Bake until cheese begins to melt and mushrooms are warmed through, about 15 minutes.
  • Transfer Brie in box to plate. Serve hot with baguette slices.
  • *Available in the produce section of many supermarkets and at specialty foods stores and Italian markets.
  • test-kitchen TIP

To cut the top off the round of Brie more easily, first place the cheese in the freezer for a few minutes to firm it up slightly.
