Exotic Decor at Our Dallas store

Exotic Decor at Our Dallas store

We are fortunate enough to go on several trips a year to such exotic locations as India, China, and South America. During our journeys we stumble across unique items that might be vintage, antiques, or even the last one left. So, every trip, we're sure to bring our empty suitcases to fill with these rare finds so we can carry them back home.

Handmade Books in Jaipur, India

Making Books by Hand

This company was started when three young friends rented a booth at a trade fair 14 years ago to sell books and bags made of handmade paper. This Indian artisan has grown great lengths since then and now specializes in handmade paper, bags, books, and leather products. They are located in Jaipur, India and also have a small group of designers and workers from a small village outside of Jaipur.

Wisteria Halloween Costumes

Clown, disco girl, cat!

We certainly are festive when it comes to holiday celebrating! Halloween is no different. Here are a few photos of people around the office in their costumes.

The marketing department honored the Occupy groups around the nation by dressing up as Occupy Wisteria. Members of the creative department dressed each other up. They drew each others names from a hat and dressed up the person they drew. Several other people showed their personality through their costume. To see our store employees’ costumes, visit the facebook page!

Have a look. Let us know what you think!

What are you dressing up as for Halloween?

Holiday Table Settings

Ah, the holidays! Parties, dinners, family and friends…I always enjoyed the holidays when my mom was preparing everything. Well, now the tradition has been passed to me and I will be hosting my 2nd Thanksgiving with friends and family. The planning of the menu, shopping for groceries, cooking for days and last but not least, pulling out my china, silver and crystal to set the table for the feast!

My mom taught me well…I am a stickler for a well set table complete with flowers, candles and a few seasonal decorations. For those of you who are always asking, where exactly does the dessert spoon go? Read on…

The distance between places at the table set must never be so short that guests have no elbow room. About two feet from plate center to plate center is ideal. Decide if you are going to be using place mats or a tablecloth. The dinner plates are first put around the table at equal distances. The silver flatware is placed in the order of its use closet to the place, therefore the salad fork is placed next to the left of the plate, then the meat fork. Just to the right of the plate is the salad knife and on the outside is the meat knife. The cutting edge of each toward the plate. Outside the knives are the soup spoon. Dessert spoons and forks are brought in on the dessert plate just before dessert is served. Or you can place them above the plate with the handle of the spoon facing to the right and the handle of the cake fork facing to the left.

If bread or rolls are to be served, a butter plate should be used. The butter plate is located above the forks at the left of the place setting. The butter knife is laid across it, slightly diagonally from upper left to lower right, with the sharper edge of the blade toward the edge of the table.

The wineglasses chosen for the formal table setting depend upon the menu, but their table setting arrangement is according to size, so that little ones are not hidden behind large ones.  Place them directly above the knives in a straight row slanting downward from the upper left. Generally only one, at the most, two, wines are served, so a water goblet and one (or two) wineglasses are all that are necessary. Frequently wine is not served at all, and iced-tea glasses or simply tumblers for water are used.

If you plan to serve coffee with the meal, the cup and saucer go to the right of the setting, with the coffee spoon on the right side of the saucer.

Happy Holidays!

We view our artisans as partners and look for like-minded organizations that are just as committed to their employees, community, and the environment as they are dedicated to great quality and interesting design. This company has been creating charming works of art for over 20 years. Each creation is finely crafted by hand, showing the nicks and notches that can only come from being handcarved. After that, each piece is individually painted! No doubt these artisans take great pride in their craftsmanship!

These artisans handcraft some of our favorite items including our Handmade Wooden Bird Ornaments, our Dashing Through the Snow Critters, our Hiking to the North Handmade Ornaments, and our Ready for Winter Handcarved Ornaments. They make two classic Wisteria items we’ve had around for years, our Handmade Derby Critters and our Handmade Derby Forest Critters.

Charley in her Owl Costume

You may recognize our newest Wisteria “model,” Charley, in our fall catalogs (She made her debut in our summer spreads earlier this year). In our Halloween collection, she is shown as a very adorable blue owl, and I couldn’t help but ask Paige, our Creative Manager, how she came up with this fantastic costume.

I was surprised to learn that it was quite simple. She cut out felt and fabric from an old men’s suit (she found at a thrift store for super-cheap) and hot glued them to an over-sized black t-shirt. That’s right, NO SEWING! Since you overlap the “feathers,” the glue doesn’t show. Even the mask was an easy task; felt glued to an inexpensive, basic black mask from the craft store.

Voila!

About two months ago I made a trip to the Denton Animal Shelter to look at possible volunteering opportunities. Little did I know I would not end up leaving empty-handed. On Friday, September 2nd, I adopted a 50-pound heeler/bull mix, and decided to call him Klaus.

Oh so bashful.

Fortunately for me, he arrived just in time for his first Halloween with me. I go all out for this delightfully spooky holiday, and always come up with several costumes for various parties and events throughout the month. Klaus has adapted to my customs and has acquired a few costumes of his own, but now he can’t seem to decide which one he wants to wear for the big night. Here are just a few that he seems to like the most:

“Shut the front door!” comes out of my mouth quite often when I am in disbelief. Therefore, I thought it would be the perfect way to describe these amazing looking doors full of color and personality.

If you are looking for a quick fix to update your home’s look for fall, or simply want to make a stunning background for the holiday wreath, hopefully these doors will inspire you.

India Monsoon Path

Arrival dates for India's summer monsoon (Wikimedia Commons)

What does a weather map of India’s monsoons have to do with our little company in the states? Well, the other day I asked Andrew and Hudson to relate some milestones from the ten years since we put out our first catalog. And as we all know, such a stroll down memory lane can sometimes result in your beginning every new recollection with the phrase, “Now it seems pretty funny, looking back on it, but…”

So borrowing the countdown formula from a popular late-night show, I’ll offer here Wisteria’s Top Ten Things We Just Happened To Notice From Our First Decade of Putting Out a Catalog.

10. Having Andy Rooney hold up your catalog on 60 Minutes could be considered good PR.

9. The nuances of making sure a shipping container full of Christmas merchandise arrives on time at the warehouse is a lot like landing a jet on an aircraft carrier.

8. It’s possible to get so carried away with bubble wrap that you actually overlook packing something inside it.

7. Ordering a new product with the specifications, “white upholstery/weathered wood” will create a thing of beauty, but swapping the adjectives can result in something else altogether.

6. Zeros, not only how many but also where they’re placed, are really important.

5. If two different suppliers in Daryapur, India are late with their orders, one claiming monsoons and the other claiming drought, could one of them be fudging a little?

4. If a factory owner impresses you with a picture of a building and it turns out to be a stock photograph, he probably just meant, “My building looks like this one. Sort of.”

3. Archaic cultural symbols carved into every piece from your big order of vintage Asian animal sculptures can bear an uncanny resemblance to the insignia of the Third Reich.

2. In the exhilarating rush of opening your first retail store, twenty thousand square feet may not sound like all that much.

1. The Rusty Paper Clip Rule: A rusty paper clip that, for years on end, has served faithfully to hold together broken plumbing parts will wait until the rush of the Christmas season to break, thus flooding a warehouse crowded with employees, half of whom desperately needed to use that very restroom.
