Exotic Decor at Our Dallas store

Exotic Decor at Our Dallas store

We are fortunate enough to go on several trips a year to such exotic locations as India, China, and South America. During our journeys we stumble across unique items that might be vintage, antiques, or even the last one left. So, every trip, we're sure to bring our empty suitcases to fill with these rare finds so we can carry them back home.

Handmade Books in Jaipur, India

Making Books by Hand

This company was started when three young friends rented a booth at a trade fair 14 years ago to sell books and bags made of handmade paper. This Indian artisan has grown great lengths since then and now specializes in handmade paper, bags, books, and leather products. They are located in Jaipur, India and also have a small group of designers and workers from a small village outside of Jaipur.

If you are at all familiar with Love Field in Dallas, then all you need to do is look across the street to find Wisteria Dallas.  Located on a busy intersection, on the outskirts of the Design District is our building filled with fabulous finds from travels around the world. We caught up with manager, Ronnie Pilgreen to ask him about what the trends are for fall, what new items they have in the store and more importantly, how was the Diana Ross concert that he recently attended!

Green Pots and Chinese Brushes

What is the best selling item in the store?

Each week there are different items that are good sellers.  Our Halloween items are popular at the moment.

Wisteria Textiles and Linens

Have any celebrities ever come in and if so, what did they buy?

Laura Bush has come in several times.  She has purchased Indian Wedding Cloths, Kantha Pillows, Monogrammed Napkins and marble risers among other items.

Vern Yip from HGTV has also been in.  He was flying out of Love Field and stopped by.  He loved our products and had lots of questions about the store.

Most recently the set designers for the new Dallas TV series that is shooting partially here in Dallas.  They are looking at lots of our furniture including the Chinese Chippendale Chairs in white.

A Wisteria living room

If you can only purchase one item in the store, what should it be?

The Chinese Butchers table is my favorite item.  It could be used in many settings from traditional to transitional.  Each table is unique and has its own special charterisitics.

Oh, how was Diana Ross?

Great show. Lasted 1 ½ hours.  She had five outfit changes.  Sang all the best hits!

Coastal Photo Shoot

This past summer we headed to the coast to do a shoot for our May Coastal look. After a serious 10-hour road trip with a trailer full of coastal product, lots of gas station coffees, and one gorgeous sunrise, we finally arrived and were ready to shoot. Towards the end of the day we found this great little pier that was the perfect setup for an editorial shot of our painted baskets. But we thought, you know what this shot is missing? Seagulls! And the next thought was, how do we attract some seagulls? The answer…. Barbeque potato chips!  Who knew?

And man do seagulls LOVE barbeque potato chips. In fact, we attracted a few too many seagulls! It was a bit like a scene from a Hitchcock thriller. What you don’t see is seconds before this shot was me screaming and running down the pier to escape “the birds.” But once everything settled down and the birds had their fill, we got the shot we were after. And then we packed up and headed back home. A successful shoot on the road!

To mark National Dog Week and as part of Vine’s ongoing bring-your-dog-to-the-blog series, the team asked me to share a little about my two rescues, Nellie and Ray. She’s an octogenarian sorta-Corgy, and he’s a middle-aged Aussie with questionable personal hygiene. But my wife and I love them both in all their differences, which prompted me to make this little 30-second video, casting them in a ’70s sitcom I think they’d be perfect for.

During the early-18th century, tea tables came into fashion because of the popularity of “taking tea.” A similar trend followed in the 20th century with the cigarette table. Smoking was a common activity for men and women of all ages and statuses, so the trend quickly spread. It was originally created to house one’s martini and an ashtray and would be nestled by an armchair, next to a doorway, or beneath a window. Any fashionable living room would not be considered well-dressed without one.

Our Venetian Cigarette Table

The standard height of a cigarette table should be pretty low, at around 18″-22″ (ours is a little higher, resting right at seating-arm level), and it should not exceed 18″ in width. Remember, they should only be large enough to hold a drink and maybe a small plate. Typically, they are pretty lightweight in order to be transported from place to place easily.

Earlier this year Andrew gave each department the challenge of decorating their own common spaces after we moved to our new corporate office location. The hard part was deciding what theme to choose and what pieces to use. All the departments are very different and the challenge really brought out the individuality within each.

Human Resources turned one of their offices in to the dream room. They created this space to be as serene as possible, because they want employees to feel comfortable when they come to speak with them.  Our merchandising department decided to go with a global theme. The two buying/design teams chose items from their respective countries: China and India.  Marketing chose a more rustic look with natural wood shelving carts and oversized chairs for a comfortable escape from their desks. The creative department selected one of our large dining room tables as a centerpiece for the space where they can come together to work or to eat, just like they were sitting at their own kitchen tables.

We heard a rumor that a contest was supposed to be held to determine which team had the best design, but a winner has not been picked yet. Maybe you can help us decide!

Ever wonder what a home decor company’s president’s house looks like inside? It certainly isn’t ordinary! Here’s your chance to peek inside the house of Andrew and Shannon (president and vice president of Wisteria)!

Shannon was kind enough to share her thoughts on decorating their home.

What is your role at Wisteria?
Along with my husband Andrew, I am the co-founder of Wisteria. My leadership in the company centers around brand management and design.

What is your personal design style?
I prefer an open, airy environment with minimal surroundings. I like to bring a sense of the outdoors “in” and to maintain a simple palette on which to showcase art and antiques. I like “order” and clean lines. I am inspired by the simplicity and pale patinas of Swedish antiques. I love light-filled rooms and many windows. There is almost a Shaker sensibility to Swedish design that I appreciate and try to emulate in my own home. I also love to mix contemporary art and furnishings with antiques. For instance, Cooper has a Contemporary Swivel Chair in his otherwise traditional boy’s room. I have a Joseph Havel sketch in our otherwise 18th-century Swedish living room.

What inspires you?
Andrew and our children! Our family and friends. Ordinary people doing extraordinary things! Jesus Christ and God’s Word in action in the world! Bible Study Fellowship and Missionaries of Charity.

What are your most prized possessions?
Andrew and our children: Cooper and Susanna. Our parents: Lisa Newsom, Jane Moore, and Daryl and Rachel Bristow. My friends. The Bible. If I had to pick an object in the house, then I would say our 18th-century Swedish secretary in our living room.

Where do you shop?
Ironically, I don’t shop much at all! But when I do, it’s at Wisteria! Other than that, I like to return to Houston (where I am from) and visit antique dealers as well as the stores, Indulge and Thompson Hansen.  In Dallas, I like to frequent Lisa Luby Ryan in Snyder Plaza, especially during the holidays. Mostly, I love to go to France and mill around in the markets in Paris and in the South of France. India is incredibly inspiring as well in terms of color and style. I like to visit Anokhi in Jaipur for tunics and jewelry.

Tell us something we might not know about your home at first glance.
Our house looks really clean and neat–at first glance. BUT, open any drawer, closet or cabinet, and you will find chaos! In another life, I would love organized drawers and closets and every loose picture placed on the wall or in an album. Our children are 10 and 8, and I still haven’t completed their baby books! It is a situation!

What Wisteria pieces are you currently lusting after?
The Glass Half Full Carafe, the French Shopkeeper’s Shelves, the Wishbone Chair in natural, Natural Linen Hand Towels, Oyster Shell Cross, Glass Column Lamp, and for Halloween, the Ghostly Yard Art. (I already have the Silhouette Witch and Cat Entourage!)
