Exotic Decor at Our Dallas store

We are fortunate enough to go on several trips a year to such exotic locations as India, China, and South America. During our journeys we stumble across unique items that might be vintage, antiques, or even the last one left. So, every trip, we're sure to bring our empty suitcases to fill with these rare finds so we can carry them back home.

Handmade Books in Jaipur, India

Making Books by Hand

This company was started when three young friends rented a booth at a trade fair 14 years ago to sell books and bags made of handmade paper. This Indian artisan has grown great lengths since then and now specializes in handmade paper, bags, books, and leather products. They are located in Jaipur, India and also have a small group of designers and workers from a small village outside of Jaipur.

Okay, we admit it; we are candy junkies! Thankfully for us, June is National Candy Month so we get to excuse our sweet-tooth for an entire 30 days. I put myself on the stand alongside my co-workers to confess our sweet, guilty pleasures. Here are some of the tidbits we learned about Alice, Nikki, and me:

Alice:

What is your absolute-favorite candy of all time? I love candy so much that I have to segment this answer:

  • Chocolate – Reeses
  • Non-Chocolate – Haribo Gummy Bears
  • Nuts – Dark chocolate covered almonds
  • Bar – Hershey’s milk chocolate with almonds

How long has this love gone on for? It all started after I got married. Now let’s not read too much into that!

What is your favorite candy color? Red is my favorite color of any candy with colors.

Rate how much you eat it: Treat          Snack           Meal           Love           ADDICTION:
I am currently in recovery for an addiction to chocolate covered almonds.

Was there a previous candy that you ate so much or made you sick that you could never eat it again? I did ban gummy bears for a period of time for moral reasons, but I got over it. Can you say addict?

What is your LEAST favorite candy? Anything with mint.

Nikki:

What is your absolute-favorite candy of all time? Sour Patch Kids.

How long has this love gone on for? I have liked sour candy for as long as I can remember. I would always pick the sour candies over chocolate.

What is your favorite candy color? The red ones are for sure my favorite.

Rate how much you eat it: Treat          Snack          Meal        Love        ADDICTION:
I will only let myself buy them on occasion, so it is more of a treat. However, if I buy them or if someone else has Sour Patch Kids, I will devour them all like it is an addiction!

Was there a previous candy that you ate so much or made you sick that you could never eat it again? In middle school, I would buy the berry Skittles everyday for 3 years. I got really burned out on them and probably have not had any since then.

What is your LEAST favorite candy? I don’t really like Kit Kat bars because of the crispy wafer in the middle.

Ryan (me):

What is your absolute-favorite candy of all time? Jelly beans! I like to eat them one by one without looking so I can guess the color.

How long has this love gone on for? Since I was very little.

What is your favorite flavor/color? Though peach Jelly Belly’s are my favorite, red is typically my favorite color in most other candies.

Rate how much you eat it – Treat       Snack            Meal           Love           ADDICTION:
It’s a pretty ardent love I have for them. Though eating jelly beans is sort of a ritual for me, so I guess that could be a borderline addiction.

Was there a previous candy that you ate so much or made you sick that you could never eat it again? I used to love Gummy Savers so much I ate them every day. One day, I just stopped eating them.

What is your LEAST favorite candy? Anything with peanuts.

Our travels around the world always bring back interesting stories and products. On a recent trip to Singapore, Hudson and Serge were walking through a mall to catch a cab, when they spotted something out of the corner of their eye. In big letters, they saw a sign that said “Fish Spa.” Immediately, they thought of pampered fish with cucumbers on their little eyes (is a fish’s life so stressful that it needs a day at the spa?). Intrigued, Hudson and Serge couldn’t resist walking over to see what exactly this place was.
As they walked up, they saw what looked much like an internet bar: simple wooden benches pulled up to a wooden bar where you could place you laptop. The only noticeable difference was the giant fish tank where your feet would dangle. Inside the tank were thousands of doctor fish (can’t you just imagine fish with little stethoscopes?), the name given to two different species of fish that actually nibble the patient’s feet.

“Well, you only live once!” They decided to go for it. Now, comes to the part you’ve all been waiting for: What did it feel like? The nibbling felt like little electrical shocks, supposedly an enjoyable sensation for anyone visiting these fish spas. Hudson and Serge–they were just shocked!

Fragile X Syndrome is a serious mental impairment, causing severe cognitive or intellectual disabilities resulting from a single gene mutation. It is the most commonly inherited form of mental impairment, affecting one in every 4,000 men and one in every 6,000 women. Currently, there is no cure.

The goals of Families for Fragile X are to promote public awareness, provide family support for those afflicted by Fragile X, and to help fund scientific research leading to better treatments and finding a cure for Fragile X Syndrome. A portion of the proceeds goes to the University of California/Davis MIND Institute, one of the leading Fragile X clinical and research facilities, and the South Florida Fragile X Clinic, aimed at assisting those affected by this disease.
