Small Change is the business name of Compassion, a non-profit organization founded in 1994 by recording artist Don Eaton, who is now the executive director. Small Change was born out of Don’s broken heart while watching a documentary on hunger. Don simply could not imagine that 20 people per minute die of hunger, while in that same minute the governments of the world spend one million dollars building lethal weapons.
One of Small Change’s core concepts is that “No one makes a bigger mistake than the person who does nothing because they can only do a little.” Don also realized that two kinds of hunger are in the world: The hunger of the body AND the hunger of the heart (spiritual/emotional hunger). And each of us can do something about both kinds of hunger. Small Change’s mission is two-fold: To inspire, motivate and educate people to make small changes in the way they think, speak, and act so they can be the compassion (be the change) that is so needed in the world. To save their small change for hunger relief as an example of just one small change they can make.
Don Eaton carries the mission of Small Change into the world. Small Change has a wide variety of programs such as concerts (including house concerts), retreats, seminars, worship services, arts and lecture programs, and conferences. Small Change also produces CDs of Don’s songs that help to inspire people to be compassion in action. Part of the profits from the sale of each of Don’s CDs supplies a family of four in a third world country with seeds to grow their own vegetable crops for one year. Every cent of the small change saved and donated is used for direct hunger relief. Our focus is to supplying oral rehydration salt (ORS) packets and other low cost, high impact relief items to only the highest rated relief agencies. To date, Small Change has helped to save 1,800,000 lives with small change: pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters!
