Exotic Decor at Our Dallas store

We are fortunate enough to go on several trips a year to such exotic locations as India, China, and South America. During our journeys we stumble across unique items that might be vintage, antiques, or even the last one left. So, every trip, we're sure to bring our empty suitcases to fill with these rare finds so we can carry them back home.

Handmade Books in Jaipur, India

Making Books by Hand

This company was started when three young friends rented a booth at a trade fair 14 years ago to sell books and bags made of handmade paper. This Indian artisan has grown great lengths since then and now specializes in handmade paper, bags, books, and leather products. They are located in Jaipur, India and also have a small group of designers and workers from a small village outside of Jaipur.

small spaces

Decorating for a small space doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style.  The pieces shown above demonstrate how versatility and keeping things open and airy create the ideal small space.  As a city-dweller living near downtown Dallas, I hold this topic close to heart!

5 simple solutions for small spaces:

  1. Instead of using a coffee table, try pairing two smaller tables that can be moved around (and even better if they have hidden storage!).
  2. A large mirror opens up a smaller room, giving the illusion of more space.
  3. A simple, sleek sofa is the perfect blank canvas for fun pillows, allowing you to pop in some personality.
  4. Extra seating that can be moved around is great for accommodating guests.
  5. A consistent color palette creates unity, bringing all the pieces in the room together visually.

I am usually not one to talk much about food, much less celebrate a day dedicated to it…however, I could not resist the temptation to search the internet for the most delicious looking sandwich in honor of National Grilled Cheese Day.  Let’s just think of it as the Americanized way to eat like the French for a day…cheese, bread, and yes add a glass of wine to indulge in this yummy treat!

Spinach and Artichoke Grilled Cheese Sandwiches (courtesy Joy the Baker)

Makes 2 sandwiches

splash of olive oil

1 small clove garlic

3 cups (or 3 big handfuls) baby spinach

4 slices bread (I used sourdough)

about 2 tablespoons cream cheese

1/3-1/2 cup grated or crumbled jack cheese

2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese

1/2 cup coarsely chopped canned artichoke hearts, drained

1 heaping tablespoon sour cream

1/2 to 1 teaspoon sriracha

large pinch of sea salt

1 tablespoon butter, for grilling the sandwiches

Sandwiches are very personal so the ingredients above are entirely flexible and up to you!

In a small skillet, heat olive oil over medium-low heat.  Add garlic and saute for 30 seconds.  Add spinach leaves and saute until wilted.  This should happen quickly.  Spinach just wilts in a hot pan.  Remove spinach from skillet, place in a medium bowl and set aside.

Spread each slice of bread with a bit of cream cheese.  You don’t need much.  We’re using it as edible sandwich glue.

Squeeze or press as much liquid as possible out of the canned artichoke hearts using a paper towel.

To the bowl of sautéed spinach add, jack cheese, Parmesan cheese, chopped artichoke hearts, sour cream, sriracha, and salt.  Stir until combined.

Top two slices of bread with spinach and artichoke filling.  Make sandwiches with the two remaining slices of bread.

Heat butter in a skillet over medium-low heat.  Add sandwiches and grill until each side is golden and the insides are melty warm.  Serve immediately.

An entryway is often the first thing guests see when they visit your home. It should set the tone, make an impression, and be functional! So how do you get so much out of an often small space? The formula is simple yet important, but don’t worry, we’ll walk you through it!

It always seems I rather serendipitously match whatever room we’re working on that day and luckily this day was no different! Even my coffee mug matches! (step 1: start decorating your entryway by grabbing a delicious cup of java! just kidding, kind of)

Step 1

Start with the bones

For some of you this may begin with a chest or cabinet. We chose to go with an open console to show off our fabulous and fun wallpaper. Many entryways are directly near the front door, so a mirror is a fantastic choice to catch light and bounce it through the rest of the house, not to mention a place to check your hair before jetting out the door!

Step 2

Add  lighting

If you’re lucky enough to have overhead lighting in your entryway a stylish light fixture is a must. Get rid of that builder’s grade fixture and show off your style. I also prefer two light sources so I brought in a lamp that resembles a hand painted ginger jar. I often prefer lamps at night as opposed to overhead lights because they give off a much cozier ambience.

Step 3

Seating

A place where you can put your shoes on is a must. The small garden stool will hold your belongings while you lace up your shoes. If your entryway doesn’t have the space for a chair, a bench tucked under your console will work just as well. I chose a rustic leather chair to balance out the sleek painted chinese lamp and garden stool. When selecting major pieces in a room, think of choosing items with varying textures. This gives a room that layered, comfy, cozy feeling. A soft throw, a textured wood, sleek glass, the combinations are endless.

Step 4

Books and more books

Coffee table books of all sizes should be a staple in every home. They bring color and character to any room. They are also a great way to change out accent colors in any space. I went with red to spice up the traditional flavor of our entryway but I could easily change colors next season by switching the books to green or any color of the rainbow. Books also serve to give height to other decorative objects. As you will see in the next step, this is a very important aspect of styling.

Step 5

Add Accessories

A large bowl or tray is perfect for an entryway. It can be a catchall to keep your mail, keys, wallet, or anything jingling around in your pockets organized and in one place. I chose two ginger jars for some ethnic flair and the birds play off the motif in the wallpaper nicely. Notice how some items are on books while others are not. In styling, it’s important to have items at varying heights because it creates movement of the eye. This creates more focal points in a tablescape to add points of interest.

Step 6

Add  a Natural Element

A plant, flower, or other organic material is the cherry on top of any vignette. Even though I chose to go with flowers here you shouldn’t feel limited to that. This is the element that gives your home life, texture and color. And while it’s not the only way to do so, it is one of the easiest and in my opinion, the most fun! A potted plant, succulents, branches, or almost anything organic will do the trick. Plus it’s just as easy to change this aspect of your style as it is with books when you’re ready to freshen up your look!

So there you have it,  my recipe for making a first impression. I hope you have as much fun building your entryway as I did!

Today begins the festival of color called Holi. Though the holiday began as a way to commemorate events in Hindu mythology, it’s become a way of bridging relationships between different cultures; an event that celebrates togetherness, as participants welcome spring by tossing vibrant pigments onto each other. Above you see leaders of the Wisteria team celebrating Holi during a trip to Jaipur. Happy Holi!

We launched our Pop of Color Collection back in January with pottery, pillows, and upholstered furniture. One of our favorite pops (of course, they’re all our favorites!) is the Chesterfield Bench. It’s so sophisticated with the pintucked top and turned-wood legs. Plus, you could use it in so many ways. The look we’re really into is nesting it at the foot of the bed with a matching headboard. Someone in our Merchandising department is even turning hers into a coffee table! How would you use yours?
